As I sit down to write this blog at my dell computer, with my fast food bags of trash sitting on my desk, I realize that items of globalization are all around me. Although this may not seem like globalization to us Americans, most of the items that we purchase in our everyday lives come from globalized corporations. Its amazing to think about how connected the entire world is, especially when you compare it to just twenty years ago. Its also very amazing to think how the world may be in another twenty years. Whether you argue that globalization is good or bad for the people of this earth, you can not deny that it
When I first heard about outsourcing, I thought it was just outsourcing the most basic of jobs. In my mind these are jobs such as telemarketing, technical support, and manufacturing. I think its ok that these jobs are taken away from Americans because in a sense, it “shares the wealth.” I think this sharing of the wealth helps the global economy because the new money that is made is able to circulated back into a different economy then that of the United States. I would also hope that the Americans put out of work by this outsourcing would use the advantages that are given to them to further their education and better contribute to the economy, unfortunately this isn’t the case.
I think the globalization movement is happening much quicker then expected. The countries that we are outsourcing our jobs to our to are booming, and growing very rapidly. I think this is where the title of Thomas Friedman’s The World Is Flat comes from. The idea that if globalization continues at the pace its going, soon there will be no countries to outsource our labor to because we will all be economically equal. Of course this is the optimistic view, and although I would like to believe this to be true, there is no way to be certain. I also don’t think this could be true because it seems like there is always the case where the rich get richer, and the poor get poorer.
Overall I would have to say that I am for globalization, but even so, I am still a little afraid of the affects of it. I am 3D artist, and its very scary when I go to the websites where other artists show off there work. I’m not frightened by the fact that some of them are better then me, what scares me is where they are all from. The artists that post their work are spread out all throughout the world. I would say that the United States has just as many posters as countries like Russia, Isreal, India, Pakistan, Thailand, and Brazil to name a few. If my profession was to ever become fully outsourced, I would have to compete with these artists, and as a result my pay would likely go down. I am all for the uniting of the globe, but thinking about competing globally to get a job is still a scary thought.
